William C. Carroll 1928 - 2008 NORTH BENNINGTON, VT. William Charles Carroll, 79, A former resident, died Friday morning March 7,2008 at the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass. He had been a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home for the past few years. Born Oct. 29, 1928 in Bennington, son of Charles W. and Ruth Bromley Carroll, he joined the Army in 1946. He returned to North Bennington to complete his schooling. He was a 1950 graduate of North Bennington High School. A career military officer, he then served with the Army until retiring in 1988 at the rank of Sergeant Major. During his career, he served in the Korean War. A recruiter for many years based in Chester, he was responsible for recruiting baseball great Carleton Fisk, and the two had become friends. He was very active in the Civil Defense program during the Cold War, In earlier years, Mr. Carroll had also worked at the former Polygraphic Company and Cushman Furniture Company. A proud military man he was a member of the American Legion Post 13, V.F.W. Post 1332 and he enjoyed promoting the Army. He was a member and Past-Master of Tucker Lodge 48 Free and Accepted Masons; served as past District Grand Master and was a member of The Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, York Rite and the Shriners. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was a former member of the Moose Family Center and Bennington Lodge of Elks. He served his community in many ways, including the Mount Anthony Union High School Board, a charter member of the Bennington Rescue Squad and as an auxiliary State Police officer. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and golf and was proud of his "hole in one" he got at Mount Anthony Country Club. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Boston Celtics. He leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David Coyne of North Bennington; sons James Carroll of Harbor Springs, Mich., and Keith Carroll of Scranton, Pa.; grandchildren, Marc Carroll, Chad Carroll, Kyler Carroll, Trevor Coyne, Meghan Coyne, Keith Carroll II, Ashley Carroll and McKenzie Carroll; great-grandchildren,Brandon Carroll, Aylay Carroll and Jayden Carroll, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Carroll, who died in 1962. FUNERAL NOTICE: A service to celebrate the life of William Carroll will be held Wednesday March 12, at 1 p.m. at the Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapelat the Vermont Veterans Home. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Veterans War Memorial Cemetery at the Veterans Home.
