William J. Congdon

1933 - 2015 BENNINGTON Mr. William J. Congdon, 82, a lifelong resident of Bennington, VT died peacefully Friday morning at the Albany Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, VT on June. 9th, 1933. He was the son of the late William Cecil Congdon and Alice (Mulqueen) Congdon. He received his education in Bennington where he graduated from Bennington High School in 1953. He married the former Elizabeth (Betty) Leigh Hobson on July 14, 1956 and later remarried the former Susan Ehrenfreund on July 17, 1976. Bill served on active duty in the United States Army as a mechanic from 1955 to 1956, and later in the Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Returning to Bennington, he worked for Jolivette and Gagliardi before starting his own business in 1964, Star Electric, Inc., a successful business he ran for 51 years. Bill served on the town's zoning board for several terms and was a member of the Bennington Lions Club. He was known for his sense of humor. He enjoyed attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed going out for coffee, traveling and spending time with family and friends, as well as his dogs. Survivors include his wife, Susan Congdon, his children and their spouses, Drs Jeffrey Congdon and Jennifer Wingate of Anchorage, AK, Jaimes Congdon and Lori of Bennington, VT, Jodi Congdon Clayton and Jeff of Macon, GA, and Jill Congdon of Bennington, and grandchildren; Bret Congdon, Brooke Congdon, Drew Congdon, Neve Congdon, Candice Hebert, Cara Hebert, Taylor Congdon, Mark Clayton, and Elizabeth Clayton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Hobson Congdon, his mother and father, and his three sisters; Agnes Congdon, Sally Congdon Smith, and Patricia Congdon Godek. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 1, from 5 to 7p.m. Memorial service will be held at the Federated Church of East Arlington on Wednesday, December 2nd at 11a.m. Burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington at 2:30pm where military honors will be offered. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his name to the Second Chance Animal Shelter. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
