WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- William E. Coons, 73, of 57 Maple St. Williamstown, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at his home.

He was born In Williamstown, Mass., on Feb. 6, 1934, a son of the late Elmer Coons and Dorothy (Lewis) Coons. He attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the Williamstown High School with the class of 1953. He also attended a trade school in Pittsfield. Mr. Coons was a veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard. He was last employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Williamstown for 28 years until his retirement in 1992. Before that, he was employed as a carpenter with the former Gordon & Sutton Contractors for about 8 years. He also worked in the Carpenter’s Union in Albany, N.Y., for several years.

He enjoyed reading, wood-working and working on his 1971 truck. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

His first wife was the former Valerie H. Leach, who died on Dec. 21, 1972. They were married in Feb. 1960.

Survivors include his wife, the former Donna Briggs, whom he married on Aug. 2, 1974; one daughter, Carol Spencer-Coons of Seattle, Wash.; one son, David L. Coons of Stark, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Shawn, Eli, Kayla, Dan, Steven, Tyler, Austin, Abby, David, and Emma; and one great-grandson Landon.

The funeral to celebrate the life of William Coons will be held Tuesday evening Oct. 23, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home For Funerals West Chapels, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA. Burial will be private. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA-Hospice of North Berkshire in care of the funeral home.
