WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- William Edward Danaher Jr., 78, of Main Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at the Williamstown Commons.

He was born in Williamstown on Feb. 19, 1928, a son of the late William Edward Danaher Sr. and Helen (Wandrei) Danaher. He attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School with the Class of 1947, where he was a star athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. He once held the school single game scoring record of 35 points and at one time was the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball. In 1955, he was drafted and played for the former Milwaukee Braves baseball team as a pitcher for two years.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a private first class. He played for the U.S. Army baseball team at Camp Rutger in Alabama. Following his military career, he returned to Williamstown, where he was employed for many years as a manager of the admissions and parking departments at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal, Vt., retiring when the track ceased operations.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Danaher was a coach in Williamstown, first at the Williamstown Elementary School and then as both the junior varsity and varsity baseball and basketball coach at Mount Greylock Regional High School, retiring in 1992. He also coached Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball in Williamstown.

He was a communicant of Sts. Patrick and Raphael parish in Williamstown. He was a member of the Williamstown American Legion Post No. 152 and the Waubeeka Golf Links.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy DeMarco and her husband, John, of Pownal and Mary A. Danaher of Howescove, N.Y.; a niece, Mary Anne Ponti; and two grandnephews, Nicholas Danaher Ponti and John Michael Ponti.

Funeral services for coach William E. Danaher Jr. will take place Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at 10:15 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Williamstown. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorial donations are suggested for the Village Ambulance through the funeral home.
