William Freeman Sr. 1932 - 2008 SHAFTSBURY William "Bill" Freeman Sr., 76, of Oak Hill Road and a well-known local building contractor died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at his residence, following a prolonged illness. Born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., on July 7, 1932, son of William and Helen Bateholts Freeman, he received his education at the Hoosac School and later at the Carlisle Military Academy in South Carolina. In earlier years Bill was employed as a meat cutter. In 1965 he founded Freeman Builders which he continued to operate until his retirement when the business was turned over to his sons. Bill was a member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and was a collector of Savage rifles. One of the most important aspects of Bill's life was his family. Determination and the will to achieve the best were strongly held values and felt by each of his family members. His wife, the former Phyllis Joly, whom he married Sept. 9, 1950, in Bennington, died March 6, 2000. Bill will be greatly missed by his three daughters, a son, and their spouses, Sharon and Clyde Mears Jr. of Bennington, Anne-Marie and James Mead of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Laurie Buck-Freeman of Shaftsbury; a son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Susan Freeman of Shaftsbury; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Caroline Freeman of Hoosick, N.Y.; three brothers and their spouses, George and Shirley Freeman of Orange City, Fla., Clinton and Sandy Freeman of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., and Peter and Peggy Freeman of Hoosick, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his dog, Jake. Besides his wife, Bill was predeceased by a son, Kevin Freeman and by his sister, Arvilla Grenier. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Anita Schell Lambert, rector of St. Peters Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in memory of William Freeman Sr. may be made to the Vermont Lung Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington.
