SANDGATE -- Mr. William G. Lomberg, 99, a longtime resident of Sandgate, died Friday, April 22, 2005 at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington. Mr. Lomberg was born in New York City on April 17, 1906, and he was the son of the late Fred W. and Frances (Schaeffer) Lomberg Sr. He was married to Eleanor Sarri on Oct. 19, 1957; she predeceased him in November 1993. Mr. Lomberg’s family moved to Sandgate in 1912, where he attended Sandgate School. He had worked on the family homestead raising cattle and sheep and later on the family turkey farm. He had worked a milk route, picking up raw milk from various farms and delivering it to the creamery in Manchester. For many years he owned and operated his own excavating company.

Being very civic minded, he had served the town of Sandgate as road commissioner for 20 years. He was the forest fire warden from 1950 until 2000. He held various other town positions including town lister, town auditor, selectman, grand juror, town agent and justice of the peace. He was a member of the Battenkill Grange and Vermont Fire Wardens Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his four-wheeler over his property and talking politics. In later years he enjoyed riding his stationary bike and traveling outside on the grounds at Equinox Terrace in his electric wheelchair. He also enjoyed watching wrestling matches on television.

He leaves two sisters, Hilda L. Thompson Wilcox of Manchester Center and Elsie L. Sprague of West Arlington; a nephew, John F. Thompson and his wife Carol of West Arlington; nieces Freda L. Berry and her husband Nelson of North Port, Fla. and Alice L. Ashley and her husband Richard of Sunderland; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Fred (Fritz) G. Lomberg in March 1986.

Funeral service will be held at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 26 at 11 a.m. with The Rev. David Bort, pastor of the Sandgate United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Lomberg will be buried next to his wife Eleanor, in the Lomberg family lot in Sandgate Cemetery. There are no public calling hours.
