BENNINGTON -- William G. McLaughlin, 65, a resident of Brookside Apartments, South Street in Bennington, died on Wednesday afternoon, April 9, 2003 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Mr. McLaughlin was born on Oct. 14, 1937 in Millinocket, Maine, the only son of Clarence J. and Irene (Michaud) McLaughlin. As a youth, Mr. McLaughlin attended Catholic schools in Maine and served as an altar boy in area Catholic churches. He served with the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958.

An engineer by trade, Mr. McLaughlin produced printed circuit boards and had been employed by General Electric in Conshocton, Ohio for 10 years, Oak-Mitsui in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. and by companies in Europe, Lisbon, Maine and Stamford, Conn., where he taught students the trade.

In his earlier years, Mr. McLaughlin served as a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed golf and flying and held a private pilot’s license. He was a member of Elks Lodge # 567 in Bennington. Mr. McLaughlin enjoyed his family and especially adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his son, Scott A. McLaughlin and 2 daughters Catherine M. Elliott and Dawn M. McLaughlin all of Bennington; his grandchildren William B. McLaughlin, Amy J. Mounts, Phyllis M. McLaughlin, Brooke N. Elliott, Ryan A. Elliott and Andrew S. Elliott; his great grandchildren Gage, Jonathan and Julian; a brother Daniel McLaughlin of Maine; four sisters, Cherry Young of North Carolina and Candace Johnson, Jeanne McLaughlin and Lisa McLaughlin all residing in Maine; his former wife of 36 years Phyllis A. Eastman of Bennington; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his favorite cat Smokey.

Funeral services for William McLaughlin will be held on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington, with the Rev. Robert Lebert, pastor of Harvest Christian Ministries, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Members of Elks Lodge # 567 will conduct their memorial service on Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
