BENNINGTON - William H. Volkmer Jr., 82, a long time former resident of Main Street, Bennington, died Monday, October 11, 2010 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness.
Born in Adams, Mass., March 18, 1928, he was the son of the late William H. and Victoria J. (Czaja) Volkmer. Bill received his education in the Adams, Massachusetts schools.
A World War II Marine Corps veteran, Bill served with the 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions in Guam and Saipan and later in Japan as part of the Occupation Forces.
He was employed by General Electric Company in Pittsfield from 1951 until his retirement in 1988 where he worked as a designer in the Drafting department. He was engaged in missile defense systems for the Polaris, Poseidon and Trident projects.
Bill married the former Beverly Bull on October 10, 1964 in Adams. Mrs. Volkmer died July 7, 2005. Bill lived in Adams for over 60 years prior to moving to Bennington in 1988.
He was a member of VFW Post 1332 in Bennington and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1861.
Survivors include three daughters, Pauline Garafano and her husband Gary of Dallas, Georgia, Marcy Volkmer (Rodney Guetti) and Darcy Volkmer (Ronnie Chenard), all of Bennington; four grandchildren, Paige Guetti, Heather O'Donnell (Roy), Philip Garafano (Lexi) and Gary Garafano Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Aiden O'Donnell; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Norman Engh of Burnsville, Minnesota; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams, Mass.
