William Haynes Obituary
William John Haynes

1933 - 2016 BENNINGTON William John Haynes, 83, of Brookdale Senior Living in Bennington, whose family owned the former Haynes & Kane Furniture store, died Monday evening at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness. Mr. Haynes, who was born Jan. 23, 1933, in North Adams, Mass., was the son of the late Samuel and Helen (Cone) Haynes. He was married on March 17, 1955, at the Cathedral in Burlington, Vt., to Kathleen Berry, who died on Aug. 30, 2015. Bill attended St. Francis de Sales Academy in Bennington and graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn., in 1950. He later attended Saint Michael's College, where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in business administration. Mr. Haynes was a Korean War-era Army veteran. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Bennington Rotary Club and served on the board of directors at the Chittenden Bank and Equinox on the Battenkill in Manchester, where he lived with his wife for several years before moving to Brookdale. For nearly five decades, Bill was employed in the family business, which was located on Main Street in Bennington before being moved to the intersection of Route 7A and Route 67A in Bennington. At that site, a 19-foot ladderback chair was erected beside the store during the 1960s and became a tourism landmark. Mr. and Mrs. Haynes raised seven children and the love of his life was his family. His giving personality touched many lives. His ability to see the bright side of things regardless of what life presented was remarkable. Bill's sense of humor and smile will be remembered by all who knew him. Survivors include three daughters, Laurie Haynes of Pembroke, N.H.; Nancy Haynes of Pownal; and Virginia Haynes of Bennington; three sons, Samuel Haynes of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; John Haynes, of Bennington, and Matthew Haynes, of Granite Bay, Calif., and 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A daughter, Deborah Lanter, and two brothers, Charles Haynes, and Samuel Haynes, and a sister, Nancy Haynes, predeceased him. FUNERAL NOTICE: At his request, there will be no calling hours. Following cremation, a memorial Mass will be held on June 3, 2016, at Sacred Heart Saint Francis Church in Bennington at 4 p.m. Burial will be private If friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to Bennington Elementary School Music Program, 128 Park Street, Bennington, VT 05201. Music and singing enriched his life right to the end. Guestbook condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net.
