WHITE CREEK, N.Y. -- William James Russell Sr., 70, a resident of White Creek, N.Y., died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at home surrounded by his family.

Bill was born in Shaftsbury, Vt., on June 12, 1936. He was the son of the late Harry and Viola (Moon) Russell. He received his education in a one room school house in White Creek.

Bill spent much of his life farming. He also did carpentry and delivered fuel. He was an all around handyman.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Rod and Gun Club in White Creek. He also enjoyed camping, racing go-carts and horse racing. His favorite pastime in the summer was hanging at the fairs and watching the tractor and truck pulls.

Survivors include two daughters, Debi Mentiply, and her companion Jeff Miller, of Bennington, and Kathy and her husband, Tim Candib, of Bennington; three sons, Scott Russell and his companion, Kristie Clough, of White Creek, Kevin Russell and his companion, Cristal Allain, of Pownal, and William Russell Jr. and his companion, Kristina Hughs, of Bennington; his former wife, Etta Russell Perry, of Pownal, Vt.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Russell and his wife, Barb, of Argyle, N.Y., and Francis Moon and his wife, Isabelle, of Buskirk, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Brenda Lee Russell, a great-granddaughter Arianna Dunham, and a brother Harold Russell.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Phillip Garippa officiating.

The graveside service will be held at the Rosewood Cemetery in White Creek on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at 1 p.m.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

If friends desire, contributions in memory of William James Russell Sr. may be made to either the Washington County Hospice and Palliative Care or the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.

Mr. Russell’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the care givers at both the Washington County Hospice and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
