PAWLET, VT - William D. Leach, Sr., 81, a lifelong resident of Pawlet, passed away Aug. 31, 2009, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
Born in Pawlet on Nov. 10, 1927, son of James W. and Ruby Harwood Leach, Bill was a 1946 graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary.
He was a World War II Veteran, where he served in the Marine Corps, 2nd Marine Division. He married the former Rosalind Reid on Feb. 14, 1950. Rosalind passed away on Jan. 28, 1998.
Bill was a dairy farmer most of his working life. He was the Director of the Bennington County Milk Co-op for 12 years and took part in soil conservation. He rented the Griswold farm for 35 years. He showed cattle at fairs and country shows with his sons for many years. He had also worked on the Stratton Ski Area road crew for four years and at Raley's Cement in Rawsonville for two summers and also drove trucks for Doug Dorr. On Sept. 22, 1984, he sold his cattle and machinery.
Bill was a 25-year member of the Pawlet Fire Department, serving two years as chief, and Town of Pawlet fire warden for 25 years. He was an 18-year member of the Dorset Fire Department and a member of the Bennington County training committee. He had been a member of the Vermont Fire Chiefs Assoc. since 1981. He was a Legacy Life member of the Harned-Fowler V.F.W. Post 6471, where he went up through the chairs and was Commander from 1977-78 and also served as Chaplain from 1996-2008. He was a life member of both the Manchester Eagles and Arlington American Legion Post 69.
He leaves four sons, William Jr. and his wife, Diane Leach, of Pawlet, Ken and his wife, Linda Leach, of Branchburg, N.J., Stephen and Charlie Leach, both of Pawlet; and his four grandchildren, Rebecca, Melissa, Kenny and Christopher.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Henry Leach.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Mettowee Valley Cemetery Chapel in Pawlet. Burial with full military honors will follow at the cemetery.
Friends may call at the Brewster Funeral Home, 34 Park Place, Manchester, VT, on Thursday Sept. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
