BENNINGTON -- William M. Grant, 96, a resident of the Village at Fillmore Pond, Bennington, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at his residence following a brief illness.

Born April 14, 1909, in Shaftsbury, he was the son of the late Morton and Katharine (Burt) Grant. He received his education in the East Arlington and Bennington schools. A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Grant married the former Theresa Marceau July 4, 1934, at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Mrs. Grant died June 20, 2003.

For many years Mr. and Mrs. Grant, together with their family, owned and operated the former King Company Cleaners in Bennington. For more than 30 years Mr. and Mrs. Grant enjoyed spending time at their camp on Hedges Lake.

Mr. Grant was a member of the Bennington Club, K of C Council 307, Bennington Elks Lodge 567 and a former member of the Putnam Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth Ann and Frank Amick of Concord, N.H., Susan and Robert Moriarty of Duxbury, Mass., and Deborah and Duncan “Kip” MacDonald of Essex Junction; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas W. and Donna Grant of Raymertown, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including his namesake William Grant Loomis of Newport Beach, Calif. Mr. Grant was predeceased by a brother, Fred Grant, and by two sisters, Florence Loomis and Caroline Ostrander.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Sunday evening.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Contributions in William M. Grant’s memory may be made to the Village at Fillmore Pond to be used by the residents activities department through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
