Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- William M. Pembroke, age 68, a resident of Bridge Street, died Monday evening, April 24, 2006, at the Albany Medical Center following a long illness.

Mr. Pembroke was born in Montpelier on April 15, 1938, and was the son of the late J. Wilfred and Beryl (Cutler) Pembroke. He received his education in Montpelier and was a 1956 graduate of Saint Michael’s Catholic High School.

Bill married Christine Hilliard on Aug. 17, 1963. Mrs. Pembroke survives.

The Pembrokes moved to Bennington in 1969.

From 1956 to 1962, Bill served in the Navy, where he was a Machinist Mate 2nd Class.

After his time in the service, he went to work for Montgomery Ward in Barre. Over the years, he was transferred between the stores in New London, Conn., Kingston, N.Y., Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Albany before the family moved to Bennington. He went to work for Fairdale Farms and then started his own appliance repair business, called Bill’s Appliance. In 1989 he went to work for Merrill Transport and was named Driver of the Year in 1993.

When Merrill closed, he went to work at Schaffer Trucking in New Kingston, Pa., and drove on the East Coast. He retired in 1994 because of failing health. He enjoyed fishing, as well as bird and animal watching. Bill was an avid photographer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his ten grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Pembroke of Bennington; two daughters; Lisa Marie Pembroke of Cambridge, N.Y., and Kimberly Burdick of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; his two sons, Todd Michael Pembroke of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jeffrey Pembroke of Avon Lake, Ohio; one sister, Beverlee Pembroke Hill of Montpelier; two brothers, Richard Pembroke of Bennington and James Pembroke of Fort Mill, S.C.; ten grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A prayer service will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington. This will be followed by a Mass of Resurrection at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 10:00 a.m.

A reception will follow the Mass at the Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Parish Center.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Members of the Lions Club are requested to arrive by 7 p.m. to pay their respects.
