William L. Mattison

1946 - 2014 BENNINGTON William L. Mattison, 68, a resident of Percy Road passed peacefully at his home on Saturday Oct. 11, following a short battle with lung cancer, he was surrounded by the comfort of his loving family. The son of William G. Mattison and Elizabeth Ostrander, he was born in Bennington on Aug. 23, 1946. He grew up in Bennington where he attended local schools. Bill married his grade school sweetheart, Mary Percey, at the First Baptist Church on Aug. 28, 1965. He first worked for his uncle, Erwin Mattison, as a mason tender, assisting him with building several projects in the Bennington area. At the age of 19, Bill went to work for the Bennington School District where he worked as a custodian for 45 years. He had worked in Molly Stark, Beech Street and Monument Elementary Schools. He retired in June 2011. He was a member of the Bennington Elks Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose and American Legion Post 13. Bill enjoyed many things in life, including being with his grandchildren each week reserving Tuesday and Wednesday nights to give them his full attention. For over 40 years he enjoyed his camp in little Bennington on Lake Champlain where he loved to go boating in addition to hunting and fishing. A lifelong horse racing enthusiast, he drove in harness races and enjoyed following his brothers in their horse racing careers. Bill kept an impeccable yard and enjoyed many hours riding his John Deere tractor maintaining the grounds. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox , New England Patriots and NASCAR where his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt Jr.. He leaves his wife of 49 years, Mary Jane Mattison; daughters, Terri Ostrander and husband, Duffy, and Billie-Jo Tifft and her significant other, Dave Wiles; and former son-in-law, Tim Tifft, all of Bennington; grandchildren, Olivia Ostrander and her boyfriend, Jason Smith, Emily Ostrander, Thomas Tifft and Madison Tifft; his siblings, James and wife, Vicki Mattison, of Pompano, FL., Beverly Mattison and a life long family friend, Rhoda Connell, Diane and husband, Robert Vince, of Bennington, Gerald and wife, Bridget Mattison, of Watervliet, N.Y., Brian and wife, Karen Mattison, of Balston Spa, N.Y., Laurie and husband, Tom Purdy, of Bennington, Gloria and husband, Tim Cahill, of Hoosick Falls, Tim and wife, Amanda Mattison, of Shaftsbury; brother-in-law, Peter Percey and wife, Laurene; step-mother, Eleanor Mattison; step-father, Phillip Ostrander; aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center staff, Dr. Ives, and special nurse Linda Brown who became his friends through this battle.
