BENNINGTON -- Mr. William Peat Sr., 87, a longtime resident of Bennington and a former resident of Port Orange, Fla., died Friday morning, May 2, 2003 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

He was born May 3, 1915 in Lachine, Canada and he grew up in North Adams, Mass. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy with the Pacific fleet on the U. S. S. Randolph as an original plank owner. He received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred when a Japanese suicide plane attacked his ship. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in North Adams.

Mr. Peat married the former Lillian Scott in May 30, 1938.

As a youth he was an avid wrestler for the YMCA in North Adams.

Mr. Peat was originally employed at Quinns Wallpaper and Paint Store in North Adams for a period of 28 years, prior to his move to Bennington in 1959. In Bennington he became co-owner of C.L. White’s Paint and Glass Company until his retirement in October of 1976.

He was a loving and affectionate husband and generous provider to his family and his community. He will be remembered for his strong will, his caring and his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Peat of Bennington; a son, William Peat Jr. of Bennington; a daughter, Mary Barber of Bennington; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Farinon and Joan Tetreault both of North Adams.

Funeral services will be private and will be held at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.
