William Potter Sr.

1938-2010 BENNINGTON Mr. William L. Potter Sr., a resident of Burgess Road in Bennington, Vt., died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his family following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington, Oct. 7, 1938, son of the late Lyman Sr. and Hazel Olin Potter, Bill received his early education in Pownal, and was a graduate of Bennington High School.

He married the former Albertha "Bert" Allen on July 16, 1960, at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

For eight years Bill served in the Vermont National Guard.

Bill was self-employed as a master plumber.

He was a 25 year member of the Bennington Moose Lodge and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1861. In earlier years Bill trained horses at the Green Mountain Race Track and showed quarter horses. His favorite horse was "Rebel Lady" which he had purchased in Alaska.

He loved his beagle "Alex" and watching NASCAR. His family and grandchildren were his main interest.

He leaves his wife, Bert Potter of Bennington; two sons, Billy Potter Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Buskirk, N.Y., Trampas Potter and his wife, Vikki, of Bennington; six grandchildren, Jessica Potter of Bennington, Kyle Potter and his fiancé, Danielle Cheever, of Winooski, Vt., Matthew Potter and Joshua Potter of North Conway, N.H., and Jeffrey and Nathan Potter of Bennington; six step-grandchildren, Adam and Michal Hovak of New Hartford, N.Y., Corey and Maureen Hovak of Colonie, N.Y., Taryn Hovak of Balston Spa, N.Y., and Jacob Butler of Buskirk, N.Y.; two step- great-grandchildren, Aiden and Madelyn Hovak of New Hartford, N.Y. He also leaves a brother, Lyman Potter Jr. of Bennington; four sisters, Anna Mattison of Bennington, Nancy Aldrich of Unionville, Tenn., Mary Ellen Williams of Gila, N.M., and Linda Cassano of Bennington; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sons, Brian and Matthew Potter.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from THE MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2010, at noon.Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington. Following the service a reception will be held at the Bennington Moose Lodge at 916 Main Street.

If friends desire contributions in memory of William L. Potter Sr. may be made to the Bennington Special Olympics through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington.
