BENNINGTON -- William Henry Franklin Pulver, 84, a lifelong resident of Bennington and formerly of County Street in Bennington, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation.

William was born in Bennington on July 11, 1923, the son of William H. and Ella (Carey) Pulver, and attended Bennington schools.

He worked at Coopers Needle Shop until it was closed, then he went to work at Bennington College as a night patrol officer for seven years and while in his final three years at Bennington College he also worked part time for the Bennington Police Department before becoming a full time Bennington police officer for 27 years, retiring at age 60 due to his eyesight. William worked the day shift until the high school was built on Park Street then worked second shift while still working for the school two hours a day.

After surgery to improve his eyesight, he worked painting houses and in the schools. He loved to fish and did so whenever he had time and enjoyed going to his brother’s camp for deer hunting.

William is survived by his wife, the former Elaine Cleaves, they were married on Feb. 26, 1942, in the First United Methodist Church in Bennington. They were married for 65 years this past February.

He is also survived by his son William J. Pulver of Bennington; two daughters, Annette Pulver Thomas of Bennington and Dale Holland of Berthoud, Colo.; his brother Fred Pulver of Wells; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlene Ann Pulver, who died in 1957; and his sister, Martha Jane Pulver, during infancy.
