BENNINGTON -- William Joseph Riley, 82, a resident of Brookside Apartments in Bennington and more recently of the Vermont Veterans Home, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at the Veterans Home following a long illness.

He was born in Bennington, June 25, 1927. He was the son of the late William Anthony Riley and Claudia Mary (LaCroix) Riley. He received his education in Bennington. In the 1940s Bill trained as a boxer and had represented Southern Vermont in the Vermont State Golden Gloves Championship. Bill served in the Army where he served in the Trans Artic Group while stationed at the Thule Air Base in Greenland. He later served in the Army National Guard.

He married the former Mary Elizabeth Rice on Dec. 23, 1950, in Bennington. In earlier years Bill was employed at various local mills and for many years was a self employed painting contractor.

He was a member of the former Beech Street Fire House and a member of the American Legion Post 13. Bill was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, pleasure boating, hunting and trapping and especially enjoyed spending time at his camp in Searsburg.

Survivors include a daughter, Willene S. R. Martin, and her husband, Karl H. Martin III, of Bennington; three step daughters, Suzzette Despres and her husband, Raul, of Chicago, Ill., Cecelia Delwimple of Bennington and Carolyn Pollitt of Rochester, N.Y.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a very close friend, Jane Moffitt of Bennington, three sisters, Joyce Christensen and her husband, Andrew, of Lake George, N.Y., Corine Philpott and her husband, Carlton, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Priscilla Ward and her husband, Thomas of Hancock, N.H. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate the life of William Joseph Riley will be held from the All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home on Feb. 3, 2007, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Demasi officiating. A reception will follow the service at the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on May 5, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
