William Joseph Stockman 1959-2012 BENNINGTON William Joseph Stockman, age 53, a former resident of Bennington and more recently of Altamont, N.Y., died oN Wednesday, May 16, 2012 in Bennington at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Jean Ratelle, following brief illness. He was born in Bennington on February 28, 1959 and was the son of Francis (Quirk) and Chester Stockman of Bennington. Billy received his education in Bennington and is a graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School, class of 1987. While living in Bennington, Billy had been employed at McDonald's on Northside Drive. He moved to Altamont, N.Y., in 1995 and while living there, he had been employed at Price Chopper, and more recently at 300 Pearl Street in Albany, NY. Billy had been a very active member of the Bennington Lions Club years ago, more recently the Guilderland, (NY) Lions Club. Billy was a Melvin Jones Fellowship Recipient, the highest honor bestowed in Lionism. He had held several offices throughout his years as a Lion. He had participated in Special Olympics for many years, loved to bowl, visit the Library, and DANCING and DISCO. Survivors besides his parents include two sisters and their husbands: Betsy and Jean Ratelle of Bennington, and Eileen and James Dick of Rutland, Vt. One brother and sister-in-law, George and Patricia Stockman of Collinsville, Tenn. He leaves several nieces and nephews including; Cathy and husband Dan Scribner, Amanda Sinclair and her partner Janet Nutter, John Ratelle and wife Kim, Suzie and Dan Bukley. Eileen and James Main, Andrew and Paola Dick, Maureen and Dale Bennett, Brooke and Al Arabella and Michael Stockman. Billy leaves seventeen great nieces and great nephews, and one uncle Thomas Stockman of Bennington. Also Billy is survived by his housemate family from Altamont including: Robbie, Mike, Sarah, Jody, Lauren, Carol, Merritt, Charles, Jim and Kyle. He is predeceased by his sister Judy, in died in August 1977. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at 12 p.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, in Bennington. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
