William Theodore Day

Obituary Condolences

EAST ARLINGTON -- William Theodore Day, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather died on Monday evening, Dec. 22, 2003 at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington following a long illness.

He was born in Woodhaven, Queens, N.Y., the son of the late Margaret and Theodore W. Day. He graduated from Richmond Hill High School in Queens and attended Farmingdale Agricultural School until World War II began. Mr. Day served his country in the 8th Air Force until September 1945.

He married the former Violet Vogt on Oct. 6, 1946 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Woodhaven, N.Y. His desire to live in Vermont was realized in 1959 when he moved with his family to Sunderland, near where he had vacationed with his parents from the age of 3, at the Hill Farm Inn.

After working at various jobs in the area, he realized his dream of having a business in Vermont and he and his wife opened the Christmas Days shop in Sunderland, from which they retired in 1987. Mr. and Mrs. Day retired to Prouty Hill in East Arlington, and Bill enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and working with his Craftsman tools making Shaker boxes and furniture. Riding his tractor and mowing the lawn were the height of his farming career. A loving and devoted grandfather, he was always available for any and all activities in which his grandchildren were involved, and he was a patient babysitter.

Mr. Day is survived by his wife Violet; his son and daughter-in-law, Theodore W. and Susan S. Day of West Caldwell, N.J., and their son William Theodore Day II, and their daughter Rebecca Day; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Andrew McKeever of Sunderland and their twin daughters, Megan and Sarah McKeever; and his younger son Robert J. Day and his daughters Heather and Katie Day.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington, with the Rev. Thomas Truscott, officiating. There are no calling hours scheduled. Interment will take place privately in the spring. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Mission Committee of the Federated Church or the Arlington Rescue Squad in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Arlington Chapel, P. O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.
