Obituary Condolences

Wilma M. Montgomery Rice 1914-2010 BENNINGTON Wilma M. Montgomery Rice, 95, a native of Arlington, passed away Thursday November 25, 2010 at the Crescent Manor Convalescent Center in Bennington. Wilma was born in East Arlington, the daughter of Lewis and Leila (Vaughn) Montgomery on December 9, 1914. She grew up in East Arlington where her father ran the Montgomery Grocery Store for many years. Wilma was a graduate of Arlington Memorial High School class of 1933. In 1934 she married Alfred Rice of Bennington whom she met on the West Arlington Green where they both enjoyed square dancing. After their marriage, Alfred and Wilma raised three children and ran a small farm on Warm Brook Road in Arlington. Wilma especially loved animals, training horses and taking people on trail rides. Also, much of the farm work and the transportation to town was accomplished with horses, especially during the World War II war years. In 1956 Wilma and Al bought and fixed up the old Martin farm at the end of Timbertrail Road in Shaftsbury and they continued to raise a variety of farm animals including horses that Wilma rode into her eighties. Alfred died on the farm in December of 1995. Wilma is survived by a daughter, Nancy Lee Foster Bousquet of Hoosick, N.Y. and Morehaven, Fla.; and two sons, William Alfred Rice of Randolph Center, and Rodney Lewis Rice of Shaftsbury; 11 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her brother Lewie Montgomery, a sister Stella Montgomery Field and a grandson, Roy Rice. A service of remembrance will be held in May. Memorial contributions may be made to the Federated Church of East Arlington, VT of which Wilma was a longtime member.
