Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Winifred (Lillie) Cabot, 80, a resident of Saint Petersburg, Fla., died at hospice there on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006.

She was born in Bennington on Oct. 10, 1925. Wendy was the youngest daughter of the late D. Frederic Lillie and Winifred Flannery Lillie. She was a 1943 graduate of the former Bennington High School and a 1946 graduate of the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy, New York. Following her graduation, she was on the staff of the Visiting Nurses Association in the Troy area.

On Nov. 9, 1947, Wendy married Russell F. Cabot, son of the late Frank and Mae Cabot of Brooklyn, New York, while he was a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. They were married at Saint Francis de Sales Rectory in Bennington, and thereafter set up housekeeping in one of the two story barracks on campus provided for married veteran students at RPI.

Following Russ’ graduation, they lived in Huntington, N.Y., where they raised their family. In 1970, following an upheaval in the engineering profession, they moved to Florida, eventually settling in St. Petersburg, where they had continued to live.

After her children were grown, Wendy returned to nursing service, working as a charge nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. There she recognized, from their caps, several other nurses who had graduated from Samaritan Hospital and they became fast friends.

After her retirement in 1988, she served as a volunteer in St. Anthony’s Hospital Wellness Program and other area medical programs. A communicant of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle since moving to St. Petersburg, she was an active participant in various church organizations and projects.

Wendy is survived by her husband, Russ; two sons, Andrew L. Cabot, also of St. Petersburg, and David T. Cabot, a missionary in Nicaragua; her daughter,Barbara C. Lally, and her two children Kathryn and Sean Lally, all of St. Petersburg; and David’s four children, Lori, Michael, Nicole and Stephanie Cabot, all of Nicaragua. Other survivors include her sister, Margaret Lillie, of Pownal; and several cousins. Wendy’s son, Steven J. Cabot pre-deceased her, as did her sister, Ellen Lillie, and her only brother, Daniel F. Lillie.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 5. She will be buried, at the convenience of the family, in Park Lawn Cemetery in the same lot where her son, Steven is buried.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Sacred Heart-St. Francis deSales Church in Bennington on Monday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. Immediately following the Mass, a bereavement gathering for relatives and friends, including those not attending the Mass, will be held at the Parish Center.

The family suggests contributions in Wendy’s memory be sent to Sacred Heart-Saint Francis deSales Church or to a charity of one’s choice through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
