BENNINGTON -- Yvon Claude Matte, a resident of Bennington, was suddenly called home to the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. Born March 28, 1942, in St. Albert, Ontario, Canada, Yvon was the son of the late Romeo and Yvonne (Page) Matte. In 1948 the family moved to Shoreham, where Yvon attended school and worked on the family farm. When Yvon was a teenager the family relocated to Clarksburg, Mass., and he ultimately finished his education at McCann’s technical school in North Adams to become a machinist. During his life he worked for Nancy Shoe company, Noble and Wood Machine shop, Harrison vending, Brown’s machine shop, and Courtaulds.

Yvon was a member of the Bennington Fraternal Order of the Eagles 1861 and very active at St. John the Baptist Catholic church in North Bennington. It brought him great joy to serve his church as a Eucharistic minister, altar server, and usher. As a young man Yvon enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing, and camping. Other interests included gardening, riding his motorcycle, and working on projects around the house. Yvon had a great sense of humor and was a kind and giving person. He loved to visit with people and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed the Labor Day holiday weekend during which his large family always gathered for a reunion.

Yvon is survived by his wife, Deborah; children, Joan Carr of Bennington, Ivan Matte and his wife, Wanda, of Buskirk, N.Y., Joseph Matte of San Francisco, Calif.; stepdaughters Jennifer Rose of Shaftsbury, Brenda Knapp of Rutland, and Jacqueline Coon, of Shaftsbury; brothers John Matte of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Richard Matte of Adams, Mass., Robert Matte and Noel Matte both of North Adams, Mass.; sisters Francoise Matte of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., Louise Weber of Buskirk, N.Y., Suzanne Matte of Brookfield, Conn., Diane Baczek of Plainville, Conn., Marie Ciuk of Petersburg N.Y., Christine Salvato of Adams Mass., and Theresa Matte of Oxnard, Calif.
