Joan A. McMartin

1933 - 2014 HOOSICK FALLS, NY Joan Anne McMartin, 80, passed away peacefully after a long illness, on March 13 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls, with her family at her side. She was the wife of her loving husband of 61 years, Spencer McMartin. Joan was born March 29 1933, in Hoosick Falls, daughter of the late Caroll and Ruth Griffin Rancourt. She was the salutatorian of her graduating class at St. Mary's Academy, class of 1950, where she was remembered in her year book as possessing keen wit and intellect. She earned her degree from Albany Business College, and worked as a Medical Secretary at Albany Medical Center prior to her marriage. After raising her family, Joan returned to work. She cooked in local restaurants and worked for Joan O'Neill Real Estate before working as a Benefit Programs Specialist for the state of Vermont. She retired with her husband to their camp at Babcock Lake, lovingly referred to by Joan as "On Golden Pond". There she enjoyed boating and swimming, weekly Saturday shopping adventures, as well as entertaining her family and friends. Joan was famous for her lavish dinner parties and holiday spreads featuring delicious meal menus and magnificent desserts. She was most known for her mouthwatering cakes, pies, cookies, and cheesecakes. Joan was the matriarch of a large family. In addition to her husband, Spencer, she is survived by her five children, Carol Holtermann and her husband, Peter, of Clifton Park, N.Y., Colleen Doyle and her husband, Daniel, of Hoosick Fallls, Thomas McMartin and his wife, Ellen, of Hoosick Falls, James McMartin and his wife, Sylvie, of Hooksett, N.H., and Paul McMartin and his wife, Kelly, of Troy, N.Y.; her grandchildren, David McMartin and his wife, Emily, Brian McMartin, Jami McMartin, Kyle McMartin, Kimberly Holtermann, Sara Senecal, and Geoffrey Peron; great-grandchildren, Jillian and Colin McMartin, Ayla Senecal, and Skyla and Stephan Peron. Joan is also survived by her sister and lifelong friend, Anne Fleming and her husband, Ken, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. All will miss her greatly and will remember Joan as vibrant, strong, fiercely independent, loyal, generous, witty, intelligent, and adventurous. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for Joan will be held Monday, March 17, at the MAHAR FUNERAL HOME in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, NY. The family would like to thank Dr. Marcus Martinez, the staff at the Danforth Home, and the staff at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, for their compassionate care of Joan, and Community Hospice of Rensselaer County for their support and guidance.
