Samuel C. Kelson Jr.

1924-2014 Samuel C. Kelson, Jr. age 89, a resident of Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington, died on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 following a long illness. He was born in Bennington on August 27, 1924 and was the son of the late Samuel and Sarah (Sanders) Kelson, Sr. He received his education in Bennington. Sam served in the Marine Corps from December 8, 1942 until November 14, 1945. He married the former Eunice Hill in Bennington on February 22, 1947. She predeceased him on June 12, 2013. Mr. Kelson was a former member of the Putnam Hose Company (Bennington Fire Department) from 1955 until 1971. He has served as 1St Lieutenant , 2nd Lieutenant and Foreman. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, and the American Legion, both in Bennington. Mr. Kelson was an avid NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and the daily coffees at McDonald's. He is survived by his children: Sandra Tilley and her husband Gary of Cambridge, NY, Samuel and Anne Kelson, of North Bennington, VT, and Stanley Kelson of Pownal. One granddaughter who was raised by Sam and Eunice, Marcy Kelson and her fiance David Boschetti of Bennington, six other grandchildren; Christy Toleman, Kimberly Leonard, Kristen Danielsen, Steve Kelson, Amber Kelson and Wayne King; seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews cousins. Besides his wife, Sam is predeceased by his daughter, Dianne Kelson, and his daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Kelson. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside committal services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 2:00PM at White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington, VT, with Mr. Kenneth Coonradt, Chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center and/or Crescent Manor Care Centers Resident's Activities Fund through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
