Helen Rogalski

1928-2014 BENNINGTON Helen Krawczyk Rogalski, a truly loving mother, wife, and grandmother, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. She was 86. Born March 28, 1928, to Michael and Agnes Krawczyk of Bennington, she was one of eight children. She was educated in Bennington schools and graduated from Bennington High School. She married Casimir F. Rogalski of Adams, Mass. on June 7, 1951 and they raised five children in Bennington. She and Cas were married 57 years until his passing on May 15, 2008. Outside of her family, Helen's greatest pride was running the parish kitchen at then-St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for nearly 25 years beginning in the early 1970s. She humorously referred to herself as the "chief cook and bottle washer," and was unparalleled in her dedication, cleanliness, and leadership of the parish kitchen. She always was a welcomed sight in the kitchen during elections, where she worked from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. helping to keep poll workers fed and happy. She also spent many years singing in the church choir. Helen also greatly enjoyed her multiple years working the deli counter at Madkour's Market on Main St. where her uplifting spirit and quick wit endeared her to her co-workers and customers. In earlier years, she was an avid gardener and expert at canning fruits and vegetables. She loved cooking Polish meals for her family and teaching her craft to her granddaughter, Helen D. Rogalski. She and Cas were passionate about Polish dances and together attended many dances in Adams and North Adams, Mass. Helen, Cas, and their five children enjoyed many Sunday getaways to Emerald Lake State Park in East Dorset, Hapgood Pond in Peru, and Jamaica State Park in Jamaica. In later life she loved sitting in her kitchen watching the many birds, squirrels, and chipmunks feast at her bird feeders. She was a huge Red Sox fan and enjoyed a healthy rivalry with her daughter, Laurie, a Yankees fan. They both cheered for the Boston Celtics. Helen was pre-deceased by her daughter, Mary, in 2013, of lung cancer. She is survived by four children: son, Robert and his wife, Penny, of Bennington, son, James and his wife, Susana Dancy, of Chapel Hill, N.C., daughter, Joanne Betit and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bridgewater, Mass., and daughter, Laurie, who lived with her and was Helen's valued friend. She also is survived by five grandchildren, Marshall, Taylor, and Helen Rogalski, and Collin and Cameron Betit. While very young, the Betit boys affectionately nicknamed their grandmother "Pie Face," a name that she adored. Other survivors are three brothers, Edward of Bennington, James of Wisconsin, and Eugene of Ohio. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
