Thomas H. Meehan

1939-2014 BENNINGTON Thomas H. Meehan, 75, a resident of Fillmore St. in Bennington died Tuesday June 17, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Sprakers, New York, June 4, 1939. He was the son of the late Bernard and Madeline Putnam Meehan. Tom received his education in Canajoharie, New York and was a graduate of Canajoharie High School. Following high school Tom joined the United States Navy serving from 1958 to 1962. He married the former Carol Smith February 1, 1960 in Canajoharie. In earlier years Tom worked at a Creamery in Fort Plain, New York. He later was employed at Agway and was transferred to Bennington, Vt. He had also worked at Cross Oil, Winslows Plumbing and Heating and Bennington College from which he retired. He was Past Commander of the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington and was a member of the American Legion Post 13, the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 and the Bennington Moose Lodge. For 25 years Tom was a member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department where he had served as Chief. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at camp. Survivors include his wife, Carol Meehan of Bennington; a daughter Deborah Meehan and Stan Jones of Bennington, Vt., two sons, Michael Meehan and Kathleen of Shaftsbury, Vt. and Billy Meehan of Bennington; four grandchildren, Katie, Richelle, Shannon and Nicholas; four great grandchildren, Aiden and Ava Cote and Brodie and Amarah Osgood; a brother, Andrew Palm and Barbara of Remson, New York; and a brother-in-law, Charles Antalek of Utica, N.Y. along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a sister Maureen Antalek. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday June 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The committal service with military honors will be on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the family lot at White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington. If friends desire contributions in memory of Thomas H. Meehan may be made to either the Second Chance Animal Shelter or BAYADA through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
