Helen was born in Metuchen, N.J., on Sept. 28, 1929, to Gus and Andromache (Psomas) Sachlos. She received her education in Bennington and was a graduate of Ben-Hi. She later attended Saint Joseph's Business College in Bennington Helen married John N. Nikitas in May of 1954. He passed in February of 1994. Helen lived in Bennington most of her life. She became a retailer with her sister, Effie Kapetan, when they opened their store The Young Sophisticates, in the 70's. She later worked for the Vermont Department of Social Services from which she retired. Helen's life passion was love of her family, taking pride in her home and her enjoyment of cooking and baking for others. In her later years, Helen's focus included her position at the Bennington Free Library, her bridge games, knitting, cooking and of course more cooking. She was a strong, honorable and compassionate soul who endured a long and bitter battle with cancer; without complaint, she exemplified grace and dignity through that journey.
