Richard J. Engel MANCHESTER CENTER Richard J. Engel, 74, a resident of North Road in Manchester Center, Vt., passed away Wednesday May 2, 2012 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt., surrounded by his family. Dick was born in Buffalo, New York, and received his early education in Springville, New York. He earned a BA at Allegheny College and a MBA from Syracuse University. Dick served in the Coast Guard Reserves for 8 years. He loved music, played the tuba and the string bass, and formed a dance band trio that performed at Coast Guard functions. Dick started his career as a CPA with Haskins & Sells in New York City, and then worked in financial management for companies in New Jersey and Atlanta. In 1979, Dick moved his family to Manchester, Vermont, where he established his own CPA practice which today is Engel Spivey Lemonik PC. In 2000, he became a licensed Certified Financial Planner and established Wealth Management Partners with his CPA partner, Lee Spivey. Dick retired in December 2010. Dick was an active volunteer with several organizations. He was on the Board of the Vermont Children's Aid Society for over 15 years, and was President for 2 years. In 2005 he received the Asa Gifford Award for Wise and Dedicated Leadership from VCAS. Dick was also active with the Vermont Society of CPAs and served as Chairman of the Board from 1999-2000. Locally, Dick was an active member of the Manchester chapter of Rotary International where he served a term as President, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. At First Congregational Church, he served in many capacities including as a Trustee, a Deacon, on the Investment Committee, and many others. Dick also served on the Board of the Dorset Field Club and was Treasurer for several years. Dick enjoyed hiking, skiing, tennis and golf. His grace and good cheer throughout his 10 month illness has been an inspiration to his family, friends and colleagues. Dick is survived by his wife Pamela Engel of Manchester Center, his son John Engel and his wife Robin of Cincinnati, Ohio, his daughters; Susan Engel of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia and Stephanie Zoufaly and her husband Scott of Latham, New York, his brother Robert Engel and his wife Barbara of Colden, New York and his grandchildren Jennifer and Suzanne Zoufaly and Samantha and Nicholas Engel. A celebration of the life of Richard J. Engel will be held Saturday afternoon May 5, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manchester. Visiting hours will be held Friday May 4, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brewster Funeral service 34 Park Place Manchester Center, Vermont when the family will be in attendance.
