Obituary Condolences

Steven C. Leonard 1943-2012 BENNINGTON Steven C. Leonard, 68, a resident of Jayne Lane in Bennington lost his courageous battle with lung disease on May 10, 2012. For years he struggled with the complications of breathing disorders, never losing his sense of dignity as he met each challenge with strength and perseverance. Steve was an inspiration to all who knew him. He worked relentlessly to assist people in need. His compassionate nurturing manner made a powerful difference in the lives of many residents of Bennington. Steve served on the Board of Directors when involved in the 204 Depot Program, a home for troubled boys. Born on June 23, 1943, Steve graduated from Montpelier High School. He attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Latin and the Classics. He continued his education at the University of Vermont earning a Master's Degree in Guidance. Steve served in the Vietnam War as an officer and paratrooper. Upon his return to civilian status, Steve began his life in Bennington working as a Probation Officer for the state of Vermont. He later opened the Smoker's Den in 1974. An avid supporter of Mount Anthony sports teams, it was a rare occasion when he wasn't present at games, both locally and away from home. A golfer at heart, he spent countless hours on the fairways and greens. Steve is not gone, for he will live on in the hearts of friends and family. He was a true friend in every sense of the word, always there when someone needed him to help or just to listen. Steve was pre-deceased by his parents, Shirley and Edith Leonard and by his nephew Christopher Ngata. He will be sorely missed by his sisters, Judy (Mike) Zabowsky and Janet Leonard of Tucson, Arizona. Countless friends mourn his passing, especially those very special friends who were constantly by his side throughout his illness, Joe, Sherry and Miss Gracie Barber, Brenda Perry, Connie Gibb and George Sleeman. No words can express what those relationships meant to him. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Steven C. Leonard will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Saturday June 23, 2012 at 11 a.m. The burial will take place at the convenience of the family at the family lot in the Green Mountain Cemetery in Montpelier, VT. If friends desire contributions in memory of Steve may be made to the Mount Anthony Union High School Booster Club through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
