Shirley C. Carroll 1926-2012 Shirley C. Carroll, 87, a resident of Carpenter Hill Road, Pownal, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 while vacationing in Medford, Oregon. Born in Danbury, Conn., March 23, 1926 she was the daughter of the late Charles and Teresa (Ross) Eames. Shirley received her education in the Danbury schools. Shirley was a World War II Army veteran. Shirley married Walter R. Carroll Sr. on July 19, 1952. He died November 4, 1988. For the past 22 years Shirley has been the loving companion of Ralph A. Brown. For many years Shirley worked at various area restaurants. She will be remembered as someone who loved people, made many friends and touched many lives. Shirley was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Bennington. A very active member of American Legion Post 13, Shirley had served two terms as Post Commander and had also served as County Commander for the Department of Vermont. Shirley was also a member of Auxiliary Unit 13 at the American Legion. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, fishing, bingo and dancing with Ralph. Survivors include her companion, Ralph A. Brown of Pownal; three children, Sandra Monhollen and her husband Randy of North Pownal, Walter R. Carroll Jr. and his companion Susan Carriere of North Pownal and Jeannette "Jenny" Reittinger and her companion Lawrence Harvey of Alder Creek, NY; two step-children, Jennifer Brown and Ralph "Scott" Brown; sixteen grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Sinto of Waterveliet, NY and Barbara Aldrich of Connecticut; a brother, Michael Keenan of Michigan and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington next week at a time to be announced. Burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Shirley C. Carroll's memory may be made to American Legion Post 13 to be used for the Legion's children and youth programs in the community.
