1933-2013 BENNINGTON Morton Abraham Cohen, a resident of Bard Road in Bennington, formerly of New York City and Kingston, N.Y., passed away at his home surrounded by his family on September 24, 2013. Mort was born in New York City on April 14, 1933. He was the son of the late Jacob and Lillian (Kraut) Cohen. He was a graduate of Columbia University and later graduated from the Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery. From 1957 until 1959, he served in the Army 87th Dental Service Detachment in Germany as Captain, Chief Dental Officer. Mort married Judith Svirskyon June 9, 1957. After returning from Germany in 1959, Mort opened his dental practice in Kingston. He and Judy made their home there, raising three children, Mitchell, Jon, and Wendy. His family meant the world to him. Mort had a great sense of humor. He was indisputably the best joke teller of all time. Mort also loved the outdoors. He enjoyed running, biking, hiking Mohonk Mountain, and walking around the Ashokan Reservoir. He was an accomplished artist and became an avid photographer, especially appreciating the beauty of his newfound home in Bennington. Mort and Judy were adventurous travelers and took pleasure in having their children and grandchildren with them on trips to various destinations around the world. Mort practiced dentistry in Kingston for 33 years. He was an active member of the Ulster-Greene Dental Society and served as President from 1964 until 1965. Mort was also a member of the Third District Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He was active in his community as a member of the Lions Club and a congregant of Temple Emanuel in Kingston. Mort is survived by his wife Judith Svirsky Cohen of Bennington; his children, Mitchell Cohen of Canyon Lake, Calif., Jon Cohen and his wife, Laurie, of Bennington, and Wendy Cohen of North Fayston; his four beloved granddaughters, Samantha, Alexandra, Abby, and Molly; and his niece, Michele Svirsky. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday, September 27, from 1 to 3 p.m., which will conclude with a brief service at 3 p.m. A Celebration of Mort's life will follow at the home of Jon and Laurie Cohen, from 4 to 6:30 p.m..
