Robert D. Agone

1917 - 2014 SHAFTSBURY Robert D. Agone of West Mountain Road, died Friday Jan. 31, 2014, after a brief illness. Born in Rome, N.Y., on Jan. 7, 1917, the son of Sabino and Ida (Pinti) Agone, he graduated from Rome Free Academy and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University at Albany. He served 3 1/2 years in the Army during World War ll. During his military career, he attended Officer's Training School for medical administrative corps. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and went to Washington and Lee University for specialized training to work with neuro-psychiatric patients. After his training, he was assigned to the Welch Convalescent Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was the officer in charge of the U.S. Army Reconditioning Program. Robert's 38 years in the field of education included positions as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach and administrator. He retired in 1977, after 13 years as superintendent of schools in Johnstown, N.Y. After his retirement, he and his wife, Betty, moved to Shaftsbury in 1981. They became interested in horseback riding and began taking riding lessons in dressage at the Schurink Riding Stables in Shaftsbury. They both continued riding well into their 80's. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Betty, who passed in 2011. He is survived by his son, David, and his wife, Grace, of Stamford; his son, Michael of Alton, Ill.; his daughter, Kathleen Agone Nastasi and her husband, Richard, of Brewerton, N.Y.; his son, Thomas, and his wife, Abby of Silverthorne, Colo., eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in Shaftsbury. Contributions in memory of Robert D. Agone may be made to the Bennington County Meals on Wheels Program through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201
