STAMFORD Stanley L Lawrence, 81, of Stamford, Vt., passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday November 1 2012.
Stan was born in Arlington, Vt., Dec. 29, 1930, son of Leroy E Lawrence, former Vermont Speaker of the House, and Marion (Blood) Lawrence. He was raised and educated in Stamford graduating from Drury High School in North Adams. He went on to attend the University of Maine then transferred to the University of Vermont, was an Alpha Tau Omega Fraternal Brother, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering in 1958. Stan was a Veteran of The United States Army and was active with the Air Force Reserves as an Aircraft Radar Technician in Burlington, Vt.
Upon graduation Stan was hired as a Design Engineer for Massey-Ferguson Co.(tractor division) in Detroit, MI where he received Patent Coverages on 15 designs of hydraulic wafering machines, which were ahead of their times. He returned to Stamford in 1964 after being recruited by James Hunter Machine Co. (JHMC) of North Adams, Mass., where he became the Chief Engineer. Over his 20 years of engineering at JHMC Stan was granted many Patent Coverages on his mechanical engineering designs including Patents in Ultrasonic Welding. He went on to Supervise and Engineer at many companies including Milton Bradley Toy Co (The American Board Game Company, Candyland), Kimberly Clark (Scott Tissue, Kleenex, Cottonelle), and became the Director of Research and Development at Clark Aiken Manufacturing and ECH Will Manufacturing Corp. He was also the former owner of Berkshire Valley Auto Sales.
Stan is most well known as the co-founder and former owner of the Stamford Valley Golf Course, which was converted from the farm that he grew up on. Stan and his wife Roberta ran the golf course for 28 years then turned the family business over to their two sons to carry on their heritage. Stan was active in his community serving on the Stamford Valley Golf Course Board of Directors, Stamford School Board, The Stamford Conservation Committee and was a former trustee of the Stamford Fire Department. He was an Adams' Mason, a Berkshire Shriner, a member of the Readsboro American Legion and a communicant of the Stamford Community Church. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling the world for work and pleasure. He was a competitive cribbage and pitch player at the North Adams Elks and was a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan. In his retirement years he spent his days enjoying his children and grandchildren.
Stanley is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Roberta Maud (Scott) Lawrence. He leaves two sons: Stanley L. Lawrence Jr. with his wife Sheila, and Mark R. Lawrence with his wife Melissa, both of Stamford. He leaves a daughter, Kelli Lawrence Corbeil of Brattleboro, Vt. He leaves several grandchildren: Stanley Lawrence III and fiancee Stacy Williams, Samantha (Lawrence) Zawistowski and husband Alan, Shaine Lawrence, Amanda Kelli Lawrence; Nicholas Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, Chad Lawrence, Connor Corbeil, and Zachary Corbeil, along with four great grandchildren Gabe, Scott, Skylar and Cooper. He leaves a sister, Ellison Finney, a Mother in Law, Fay Smith, and Daughter in Law, Terry Lawrence. Additionally he is survived by numerous sister and brother in laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Stanley was predeceased by a son, Scott Brian Lawrence, son in law, William J Corbeil, and two sisters, Priscilla Mullett and Linda Noyes.
Stanley will be remembered as a compassionate man who loved his family to the ends of the earth.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Stanley L. Lawrence Sr. will be held on November 24th at 10am at the Stamford, VT Congregational Church on Main Road. His burial will be held privately by his family at a later date. Donations may be made to the Stamford Fire Department in care of Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Homes-West Chapel, 521 West Main Street North Adams, MA 01247.

To the Lawrence Family
Please accept our condolences for the loss of your Father. Stan was always professional and a pleaure to speak with. His knowledge of Stamford and much of the oral history passed down will be greatly missed. He left his legacy to be carried on, by his sons, so that generations more of the Lawrences can continue to carry the stories started so many many years ago. My Heart and Prayers are with all of you May God Bless you and give you Strength in your Sorrow I was truly blessed to be a part of your family.Stan was a wonderful wonderful man with an awesome family. We used to have so much fun Stanley always had something funny to say. One of the memories I have is any time he would go some where he had a short cut to get there the funny thing is they were never short cuts hrs would go by we would say where is Stan and Roberta well his short cuts took him longer or he got lost.LOL You have always been in my heart Stan and always will be .You will sure be missed.
