1935-2012 ST. MICHAELS, MD Alfred Benjamin Gunter Edmonds Jr. died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, Md. on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. He was 77.

Born in Accomac, Va. on July 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Alfred B. G. and Sarah Norris Edmonds. Following his graduation from Hargrave Military Academy he attended the University of Richmond. He served in the United States Marines.

In 1963 he married the former Katie Lynn Morrell from Bristol, Tenn.

His lifelong career in journalism started at the Peninsula Enterprise, a family owned weekly paper in Accomac, Va. In 1962 he moved to Richmond, Va., and worked for the Richmond News Leader as a reporter. His varied career included working for the Associated Press in the Richmond, Va., and Philadelphia, Pa. bureaus as a news reporter, and as bureau chief in the Pittsburg office, and as a membership executive in the New York City Office. After moving to Williamstown, Mass., as editor of the North Adams Transcript, he became deputy press secretary to Governor Michael Dukakis. In 1991 he joined the Daily Yomiuri Sambone in Tokyo, Japan as an English speaking editor, and retired in 1997.

Mr. Edmonds was an avid reader, specifically biographies, world history, and world politics. He liked to walk, jog, shoot pool and hike. He loved all genres of music. He enjoyed photography.

Mr. Edmonds is survived by his beloved wife, Katie, of St. Michaels; three children, Alison M. Edmonds of Annapolis, Md., Sara N. Edmonds of Nyack, N.Y., and Alfred B.G. Edmonds III of Northampton, Mass.; four grandsons, Liam, Jack, Gunter, and Forest; two sisters, Ann Huntington of Alexandria, VA. and Jane Barnett, of Sugar Land, Texas; and 18 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister; May Gunter Kelley of New Church, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Christ Episcopal Church, St. Michaels, Md.
