Bessie Vlastaris DelVecchio

1933-2014 Bessie (Vlastaris) DelVecchio passed peacefully, with family at her side at the Chateau at Moorings Park in Naples, FL on Thursday, February 20th 2014. Born May 16, 1933 in Bridgeport CT, Bessie was a graduate of Warren Harding High School and the Butler Business School. She was a long-time member and active parishioner at Bridgeport's Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where was a founding member of the Parent Teacher Organization, and taught Greek School and Sunday School. Bess resided in Bridgeport and Stratford CT through 1974, when she and her family relocated to Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. There she and loving husband Gene founded and operated Gendel Enterprises, and hosted many memorable parties and holiday gatherings for family and friends at their Cliffwood Street home. In 1985 Bessie and Gene retired to Cape Coral, Florida, where they enjoyed many years of boating, traveling and socializing with new friends, and entertaining old friends and family who frequently visited. A world traveller, avid reader, and gracious hostess, Bessie played the piano, enjoyed cooking, needlepoint, history, theater, and games and puzzles of all kinds. Most of all, Bess was known as a devoted, generous and loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was pre-deceased by her loving and devoted husband Gene DelVecchio, parents George and Olga Vlastaris, and brother Jim Vlastaris. Bessie is survived by her brother and sisters-in-law Gus and Christine Vlastaris of Huntington CT and Judith Vlastaris of Hainesport NJ; her children Jeannie and Gene Pitney of Cape Coral, FL, Gene and Karen DelVecchio of Miramar Beach, FL, Joanne and Mike Kuprian of Griffin, GA, Julie DelVecchio Savage and Mark Savage of Lexington MA, Stephanie Whiffen of Naples, FL, and David and Colleen DelVecchio of Easthampton MA; grandchildren Karen Terrell, Robert and Migdalia Terrell, Michael Terrell, Tom and Betsy Pitney, Lisa Pitney, Linda Pitney, Kerry and Peter Nolen, Nicholas Forni, Jennifer and Antawan Ray, Daniel Forni, Andrew and Erin Whiffen, Jessica Whiffen, Moira Savage, Vanessa Savage, Emily DelVecchio, and Meghan Condon; 14 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Visiting hours from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday February 23, 2014 at the Hodges Funeral Home, 525 111th Avenue, Naples FL 34108. Funeral at 10:00 am on Monday, February 24, 2014 at the St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 7100 Airport Road North, Naples, FL. Interment to follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery in Cape Coral, FL. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bessie's memory to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Park Avenue, Bridgeport CT 06604, or the Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 7100 Airport Road North, Naples, FL 34109.
