Catherine Mary Dalmaso Smith
1920-2012 Catherine Mary Dalmaso Smith, born April 24, 1920 in Great Barrington to Emilio Dalmaso and Fortuna Battistoni Dalmaso, passed away on November 8 in Blandford at the home of her daughter, where she had been residing since shortly after her retirement.
A lifelong resident of Richmond, she was educated in a one room school house at the North East School, later graduating from Pittsfield High School and Bishop Memorial School of Nursing.
Following a brief period of employment as a private duty nurse she served in the Army
Air Corps during World War II
. After the war ended, she returned to Richmond to raise her family. During this period of her life Catherine was active in the community serving as a 4H leader, and organizing community health and disaster preparedness programs. Later in life she participated in a community project which restored the one room school house where she began her education.
Catherine is best remembered for her excellence in nursing. She was an employee of Berkshire Medical Center where she progressed from staff nurse to head nurse and then to several administrative positions. She served as Director of Nursing at Valley View Nursing Home and later as Director of Nursing at Hillcrest Hospital until her retirement in 1985.During this time she was active in the Bishop Memorial School of Nursing Alumni Association and was President of the local chapter of Quota Club.
Catherine is survived her daughters Sandra Lortsher of Blandford and Judith Saso-Pense of Camarillo, Calif., three grandchildren, Christopher Porter of Pittsfield, Danielle Wiley of Camarillo, Calif., and Jessica Sidbeck of Oxnard, Calif. She also leaves three great grandchildren and a large extended family in Berkshire County and New York State.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that Catherine's service to her community be honored by donations to the Richmond Fire Association, P.O Box 64, Richmond, MA 01254.
