1921 - 2014Retired Owner of Nichols Package Store PITTSFIELD Mr. Charles L. "Chuck" Nichols Sr., 92, died peacefully Thursday morning at Berkshire Place. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 6, 1921, one of nine children born to Harry F. and Alice M. Pharmer Nichols Sr., Chuck graduated from St. Charles Parochial School and was a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He continued his education at Bentley College in Boston, graduating in 1942. veteran of World War II
, serving as a Lieutenant (J.G.) as an instrument flight instructor. Returning from the war in 1945, he joined the family businesses on Wahconah Street, which were started by his father, Harry F. Nichols Sr., in 1914. Chuck retired in 1984, continuing to work at the Package Store with his son, Charles Jr. and son-in-law, Peter Maniatis, periodically, for many years. Chuck was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 68, a member of the Bishop Conaty Third Degree Knights of Columbus, the Exchange Club, and the Skyline Country Club. As a lifetime communicant of St. Charles Church, he was very active as an usher, lector, volunteer, and Holy Name Society officer. He also enjoyed playing in several local pitch leagues with his wife and was an avid golfer. Mr. Nichols leaves his wife, the former Evelyn W. Skowron, whom he married on May 15, 1944, at Holy Family Church. They were blessed to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary, with their entire family, this past May. He also leaves three sons, twins, Michael J. of Pittsfield and David H. (Grace) of Denver, Colo., and Charles Jr. (Carol) of Pittsfield; daughters, Theresa (Francis) Lipari of Plymouth, Mass., Judith (Peter) Maniatis of Pittsfield, and Wanda Nichols of San Francisco, Calif.; his brother, Arthur J. Nichols and sister Dorothy F. Demick, both of Pittsfield; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Francis, William, Harry Jr., Robert, and Raymond, and sister, Marion Reed. The family would like to thank the staff at Berkshire Place for their kindness and the compassionate care they gave Chuck. FUNERAL NOTICE: Mr. Charles L. "Chuck" Nichols died Thursday morning, June 5, 2014. Funeral services will be Tuesday morning, June 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 noon in St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton of Springfield, MA. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
