E. Douglas Whitehead, M.D.

RICHMOND E. Douglas Whitehead, M.D., 73, of New York, formerly of Yorkshire, England, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.He was born in Galashiels, Scotland, son of George and Erica Whitehead.

Whitehead graduated from Long Beach High School, Vanderbilt University, and Indiana University School of Medicine, served his Internship in Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, Surgical Residency at Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, and his Urology Residency at New York University Medical Center, New York.

He served as a Captain in the Air Force, Medical Corps, including one year in Viet Nam.

Dr. Whitehead spent his life committed to his patients and to the field of Urology. He was a prominent teacher and writer. A leader in Erectile Dysfunction and Aesthetic and Reconstructive Genital Surgery, he had two patents for penile prosthetic devices.

He was a man who had many hobbies and interests. He had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. He was a prolific reader, enjoyed photography, sailing, playing Blackjack and Backgammon. But most of all, he was passionate about the sport of gliding.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin Seeley, and her partner, David Slick, of Richmond, and former husband, Richard Seeley; his brothers, Roger Whitehead and wife, Susan, of Smithtown, N.Y., Richard Whitehead, and wife, Carole, of Plainview, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Harrison and Samantha Seeley; three nephews and two nieces, and his former wife, Patricia Whitehead.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, George and Erica Whitehead.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Congregation Knesset Israel at 16 Colt Road in Pittsfield. Burial service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens, N.Y. There will be a meal in celebration of his life at his daughter's home at 69 Osceola Road, Ext., Richmond at 7 p.m.

The shiva will be at the same location Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.
