Emil J. Fontana
1926-2013 DALTON Mr. Emil J. Fontana 86, of 125 River Birch Lane, Dalton, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at his home.
He was born in Farnams, Mass., on December 11, 1926 a son of the late Faustino and Lena (Volpi) Fontana and he moved the Pittsfield in 1934 and attended Pittsfield Schools and at Pittsfield High School he was captain of the Basketball Team from 1944-1945 and also a member of the Football and Baseball Teams. He was drafted in the Army
and received his High School Diploma in the Army. He was employed by the General Electric Company for 39 years and retired from the ordnance Dept. in 1987.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and had been a member of All Soul's Church. He was a veteran of World War II
in the United State Army and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, and enjoyed golfing and bocce. He was a 50 year member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club where he had the distinct pleasure of accomplishing what many golfers only dream of FOUR HOLE-IN-ONES!! Emil also was a member of the Italian American Club and played bocce in the Monday Night Men's Bocce League, longtime member of the Faccioli Club, Unico of Pittsfield and he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
Survivors include his wife the former Mary Bercury and they were married on December 2, 1967 Several nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, four sisters-in-law, Rita Fontana, Barbara Quinlan, Claire Bercury, Donna Bercury, two brothers-in-law, Edmund Bercury Jr., Charles Bercury. Emil was predeceased by one brother and one sister, Raymond Fontana and Dina Costi Gardieff.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will take place Thursday, January 17, 2013 at10:15 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA. 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Dalton with the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the Funeral Home will be Thursday, January 17, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Jimmy Fund of Berkshire County in care of the funeral home.
