James Arthur Towson
1921 - 2013 HINSDALE James Arthur Towson, 92, of Ashmere Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Craneville Place of Dalton.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 6, 1921, the son of Arthur W. and Christine Phillips Towson, he was a 1939 graduate of Trenton (N.J.) High School.
A World War II
veteran, Mr. Towson enlisted with the Army
on Oct. 28, 1940. He served with Battery A 200th Field Artillery Battalion, stationed in Scotland for three years. He was awarded the Bronze Star
Medal, as well as five bronze service stars, and a bronze service arrowhead. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 4, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
From 1950 to 1968, Mr. Towson was employed by F.L. Roberts Heating and Cooling in Springfield. In 1968, he went to work for Amherst College as a Heating and Cooling Technician from where he retired in 1983.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 9566 in Dalton and Post 754 in Amherst, and was a member of the 190th Field Artillery Group based in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Towson, who is remembered for his great sense of humor, enjoyed spending time with his family at his lake home. He was a Red Sox and Patriots fan who also enjoyed fishing, reading, music, and carpentry.
Mr. Towson leaves his wife, Antoinette E. Towson, whom he married Sept. 16, 1950, at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield.
He is also survived by two daughters, Lynn Lanoue and her husband, Harlan, of Monterey, and Lisa J. Snape, and her husband, Larry, of Chicopee; a son, Neil J. Towson and his wife, Patricia, of East Longmeadow; a sister, Nancy Martin of Grove, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey A. Towson, who died Oct. 2, 1973.
