Jay E. Hardenburg
1926 - 2013 LANESBOROUGH Jay E. Hardenburg, 87, died Saturday afternoon at home, surrounded by his loving family. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and William Hinchliffe, 9 Balance Rock Road.
Jay was born in Ithaca, N.Y., on June 1, 1926, the son of Earl and Aline Hardenburg. He graduated from Ithaca High School, attended Cornell University, and graduated from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania with a degree in chemistry.
He worked for General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y., and transferred to G.E. Plastics in Pittsfield as a analytical chemist.
Jay was a Navy veteran of World War II
, serving aboard the USS Los Angeles.
He was married to Jean M. Hardenburg in 1951. They enjoyed 59 years together. She died in 2011.
Before moving to Florida, where Jay and his wife lived for 20 years, he was a member of the First Methodist Church in Pittsfield.
Jay was an avid golfer and, for many years, volunteered as a marshall for the JC Penney Classic. He also volunteered as an usher at Tanglewood for many years. Jay and his wife spent a lot of time traveling, especially enjoying cruises.
Jay is survived by three children, his son, James, and daughter-in-law, Constance, of Queen Creek, Ariz., his daughter, Barbara Hinchliffe and son-in-law, William, of Lanesborough, and daughter, Ann Bianco, and son-in-law, Paul, of Peru; his sister, Veralee McClain of Macungie, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Brian Stokes of Lanesborough, Christopher Hinchliffe of Lanesborough, Cera Marsh of Sugar Hill, Ga., and Micah, Caitlynn, Francine, and Christian Hardenburg, all of Queen Creek; three great-grandchildren, Michael and Elizabeth Marsh of Sugar Hill and Jaylynn Stokes of Lanesborough; and several nieces and nephews.
Aside from his wife, Jay was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and by two sisters, Marjorie Edwards and Dorothy Young.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Jay will be buried in Ithaca, N.Y.
