Dr. Joseph W. Farrell Jr.

1920 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Dr. Joseph W. Farrell Jr., a local dentist and lifelong resident of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully on February 25th at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox.

Dr. Farrell was born on January 17, 1920, in Pittsfield. He was the son of Joseph W. Farrell, D.D.S. and Frances McLaughlin Farrell. He graduated from Pittsfield High School, attended Mass. State (currently University of Massachusetts) before graduating from Tufts University Dental School in December 1943.

Upon graduation from Tufts, Farrell enlisted in the Navy Dental Corps and served in active duty in Portsmith, Virginia. He served as a LTJG. After his tour of duty, he returned to Pittsfield and joined his father's dental practice and they practiced together until his father's death ten years later.

He was a Deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a charter member of the Serra Club of Pittsfield and was President and Deputy District Governor. While a member of Sacred Heart parish he was a President of the Holy Name Society. In the 1960s when he moved to St. Teresa's parish, he served on the parish council and served as a lector for many years. He also served on the Presidents' Council of Trinity College, Washington, D.C. He retired in 1995, after 52 years of practicing dentistry. In his retirement he became a volunteer with Elder Services. In 2000, he was recognized by Elder Services for "Excellence in Volunteering." And, in 2005 he was awarded the St. Teresa's Church "Extraordinary Service" award. In recent years he was a member of St. Ann's Parish in Lenox. He was also a member of the Country Club of Pittsfield.

He and the former Annemarie Cowhig of Lenox, were married at St. Ann's Church in 1951. In addition to his wife Annemarie, he is survived by nine children and their spouses, Joseph W. and Mary Lou Gibson Farrell of Snowmass Village, Colo., Mary F. and Paul Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa., Anne F. and Rocky Clark of Portland, Maine, Kate F. and Gary Mayne of Colorado Springs, Colo., Francis X. and Denise Sabert Farrell of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Thomas B. and Kathryn Wall Farrell of Portland, Maine, John F. and Jane Zwally Farrell of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Margaret F. and William Goggins of Newport News, Va. and Jane F. and John DeCoursey of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; 27 grandchildren: J. Theodore and Rita Farrell, John (Heather) Clark, Elizabeth (Andy) Guillerault and Margaret Clark, Sarah and Daniel Mayne, Timothy, John C., Anna, Claire, Grace, Annie, Jane, William, Kathryn, Megan, Thomas and Charles Farrell, William, Catherine, Mary, Helen and Thomas Goggins and Andrew, Julie and Caroline DeCoursey and two great grandchildren: Madeleine Clark and Evelyn Guillerault, as well as five nieces and one nephew and their families. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Adelene Cowhig Quigley and her husband Michael.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Farrell Volin of Worcester, Mass.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service for Dr. Farrell will be held on Thursday, February 28th at St. Ann's Church in Lenox at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 27th from 4 to 7p.m. at St. Ann's Church, 134 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.
