Joseph P. Whalen

1923 - 2013 TYRINGHAM Joseph P. Whalen of 1 Jerusalem Road, Tyringham, passed away Sunday at his home.

He was born July 24, 1923, son of Joseph Whalen and Louise Merwin. Raised in Lee, he attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Lee High School in 1942. Upon graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps and served from 1942-1945 as a radio/gunner in a B-25 Mitchell. He flew 65 missions in the European Theater receiving two Purple Hearts, an air medal, and seven clusters. He flew all 65 missions with pilot James Littlefield with whom he reunited five years ago. When he returned from war, he worked as a Massachusetts state police officer from 1945-1946. He then went to work on Hines' Farm on Plunkett Street in Lenox, where he met his wife of 57 years, Marion Annie Hines. They were married on June 28, 1947, in Newport, Maine. She died on January 25, 2003.

Joseph worked for B & P and Superior Springs as a truck driver retiring in the early 1970s. He then spent many years as a caretaker for many families in Tyringham. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports, woodworking, and firefighting. He served 47 years as a member of the Tyringham Volunteer Fire Company (chief from 1973-1981), retiring in 1999.

He leaves his beloved granddaughter Lori Curtin and son-in-law John Curtin, and a son, Kenneth Whalen of Manchester, NH; his grandsons, Michael Curtin and his wife Pam, Mark Curtin and fiancee April, and granddaughters Kirsty and Ashley Whalen of Manchester, NH, as well as his two great-grandchildren, whom he thought the world of, Madison and Colby Curtin; brothers, David Whalen of Lee, Raymond "Skip" Whalen and his wife Myra of Stockbridge, William "Bub" Whalen and his wife Harriet of Cohoes, NY; sister-in-law, Jane Whalen of Lee, and sister-in-law Christie Hines Mackenzie of Plymouth, ME, as well as many loving nieces and nephews whom he adored.

Besides his wife, he was pre-deceased by his son, Dennis; daughter, Janice "Sissy" Curtin; brothers, Donald, Robert and Michael Whalen, and John "Hinky" Whalen and his wife Joyce; his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Norman and her husband Harold, sister Margaret "Peg" Martel and her husband Real, and sister-in-law Mary Whalen.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Joseph Whalen will be Thursday at 9:15 AM from the KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in Tyringham Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 7 PM at the funeral home.
