Margaret N. Tracy
1920-2013 Margaret N. "Peg" Tracy, 92 of 49 Main Street, died January 24 at home.
Margaret, or "Peg" as everyone knew her, had been a Stockbridge resident for 77 years. Born June 29, 1920 in Great Barrington, she was the daughter of Charles and Ellen Kane Norton. Educated in local schools, she graduated from the former Searles High School. She received a BA in mathematics from the College of New Rochelle in 1942.
From 1942-1944, Mrs. Tracy worked as an engineering assistant in GE's electro-mechanical division in the General Engineering Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y. She often traveled to the New London Navy Base with GE engineers to do research in the LST-542 class of tank landing ships.
On August 17, 1944, she married Joseph Murray Tracy at St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington; he predeceased her August 12, 2002. They lived in Pensacola and Melbourne, Florida until 1946 when they settled in Stockbridge. Mrs. Tracy began teaching mathematics at the former Williams High School and continued teaching at Monument Mountain Regional High School. She served as the math department supervisor for grades 7-12. She retired from teaching in 1985 and then tutored GED students following her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge. Mrs. Tracy served on the boards of the Laurel Hill Association, the Stockbridge Library, and the Children's Health Program. For 21 years, she served on the High Meadow Foundation Scholarship Committee and was on the Stockbridge Board of Registrars from 1965-2009. Most recently, she volunteered for the Stockbridge Historical Room. An avid birdwatcher, she volunteered and participated in many activities at Pleasant Valley Sanctuary. She was a long time member of Wyantenuck Country Club and enjoyed traveling (especially to Bermuda), playing bridge, and reading.
She leaves four children, C. Joseph Tracy (Cheri) of Interlaken, Mary Elizabeth Gamble (Bruce) of Wellesley, Dr. Katherine Tracy (Robert Doolittle) of Hebron, CT and John Paul Tracy (Diane) of Great Barrington, eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Margaret N. Tracy, who died January 24, will be held on Monday January 28 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Stockbridge. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday January 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME.
