Nancy Root

1924 - 2014 SOUTH EGREMONT Nancy Mitchell Root, 89, died peacefully in her sleep at home on July 12, 2014, just 13 days after her beloved husband of 66 years, John Root Sr., crossed the threshold. Nancy was born in Fall River on Sept. 25, 1924, the second child of Harold Hubbard Mitchell and Mary Holiday Mitchell. The family settled in Jackson Heights, N.Y., where Nancy attended the Garden School. Having graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in philosophy, Nancy was getting a Master's in teaching from Columbia, when she met Johnny. They married in 1948, settled in New York City and, from their first date to their last breaths, they were utterly devoted to each other. Nancy received training in Eurythmy and performed for years with a number of different groups in the New York area. She also taught at the Rudolf Steiner School in NYC. Moving to South Egremont in 1981, she and Johnny cared for adults with special needs as part of a lifesharing community. Having been raised in a close and loving family, Nancy, in turn, provided her extended family and community with a similar love and interest. She organized many large-scale conferences and arranged and supported artistic endeavors of all kinds. Having survived many life threatening illnesses with the help of Anthroposophical medicine, and her invincible optimism, Nancy died of old age, cared for by her children at home, and by Stephen Maye. The family wishes to thank HospiceCare of the Berkshires, especially Andrea Black. Nancy is survived by her three children and their partners, John (Rose Stanley, and Christina Palmadesso Root), Ann-Elizabeth (Richard Meyers) and Christina (Don Jamison) and by 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Like Johnny, she also leaves a large community of friends and fellow visionaries whose work she admired. Donations in her memory may be made to any of the following organizations, all dear to her heart: The Berkshire-Taconic Branch of the Anthroposophical Society, P.O Box 721, Philmont, NY, 12565; The Christian Community Church, 10 River Lane, Hillsdale, NY 12529; Walking the Dog Theater, P.O. Box 300, Ghent, NY; and Common Good Finance, P.O. Box 21, Ashfield, MA 01330
