October 11, 1919 - March 15, 2014 PITTSFIELD Nicholas James Makes, a Pittsfield native and restaurateur, died peacefully at his home of 67 years on Saturday, March 15, 2014. "Nick" was born in Pittsfield on October 11, 1919. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1937 and served in the Army
Air Corps in Europe during World War II
. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. Nick worked with his father at the former Berkshire Restaurant before and after the War. Nick married Marion "Muna" Tierney on September 6, 1947. They owned and operated The Yellow Aster Restaurant for 30 years. He and Marion were married for almost 54 years until her passing in 2001. Nick was a 60 year member of the trade association United Commercial Travelers, as well as the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 68. Nick was known by many from the community for his warm smile and the hospitality he extended at the Yellow Aster and in his home. He was a dedicated and loving father to his children including Michael James Makes and his wife, Esther Conolly, of Pittsfield, Victoria Yurkerwich and her husband David of Fairfield, Conn.; Nicholas Tierney Makes and his wife Patti, of Southport, Conn., Brigid Makes of Foster City, Calif; Katie Dabe and her husband, Ron, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Nick also had 48 nieces and nephews, most of whom were pressed into service at one time or another at The Yellow Aster. He was a godfather, mentor and special uncle to many of them. Nick also leaves behind his best friend, and caregiver, Beverly (Beth) Horton of Becket. Nick was predeceased by his mother Catherine Marie Doheney; his father James Michael Makes; his brother, James Makes; his beloved sister, Mary O'Connell and his traveling companion, Stephen Barry. He was a lifelong and avid Boston Red Sox fan. For his 90th birthday, Nick enjoyed the company of family, friends and Luis Tiant in the Legends Suite and being featured on the 'Jumbotron' at Fenway Park. He also enjoyed horse racing, a hobby he pursued until the last, and doing the daily Jumble. He was a tender and inspirational teacher to all who knew him. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral Services for Nicholas J. Makes (94) who died Saturday, March 15, 2014 will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church at 10:15 a.m.celebrated by Msgr. Rev Michael Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours on Tuesday will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to either St. Joseph's Church or the Jimmy Fund in care of the Dery Funeral Home at 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
