Robert Tierney Sr.

Robert A. Tierney Sr.

1928 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Robert A. Tierney Sr., 84, of Unkamet Drive died on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at his home.

Born on July 6, 1928, the son of Peter W. Tierney and Judith Drennan Tierney, he was educated in Pittsfield and was a 1946 graduate of St. Joseph High School.

Bob was a master carpenter and wood worker. During the Korean War, he served in Germany and France. After his discharge, he resumed his career, married his sweetheart, Jean, and began raising a large family.

He went on to create and teach the Industrial Arts Program at Lee Central School, where the students fondly called him RT. In later years Bob supervised the building and grounds staff at Hillcrest Hospital and retired after being employed by the City of Pittsfield.

Mr. Tierney is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Carmel Tierney. They were married on Dec. 27, 1952, in the former Notre Dame Church. He was a wonderful husband. He and Jean, "his bride" as he called her, had a long, beautiful and loving marriage.

Bob was happiest when surrounded by his family. Every Sunday, he looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed having large celebrations on Christmas Eve and the 4th of July.

Bob's hobbies included hunting, fishing, restoring old cars, boats and anything with a motor. He enjoyed sharing his skills and tricks of the trade with his children on their own home renovation and construction projects.

Bob was a man of strong faith. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mark's Church. During his retirement years, he attended daily Mass, followed the achievements of his grandchildren, and tinkered with anything that needed fixing. He could often be found on the local lakes, in search of the perfect trout and swapping stories with lifelong friends.

Bob was a great man and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his brothers, Edward M. Tierney, and his wife Sybil, Peter J. Tierney, and his wife, Francis, and Shaun J. Tierney, and his wife, Carol; his brother-in-law, Clifford Carmel and his wife, Jane; his sister-in-law, Mildred Wuinee and her husband, Edward; five children, Robert A. Tierney Jr. and his wife Jody, Shaun F. Tierney and his wife, Mary, Timothy P. Tierney and his wife, Christine, Elizabeth A. "Becky" Shepard, and her husband, Thomas, and Daniel J. Tierney; 13 grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as "Poppy," Jennifer Tierney, Robert Tierney III and his wife, Yodith, Abby Tierney, Colin Tierney, Meagan Gemborys and her husband Brian, Jessica Austin and her husband, Timothy, Brian Tierney and his wife, Heather, Timothy Tierney and his wife Cheryl, Joshua Tierney, Jamie Tierney, Andrew Shepard and his wife, Jennifer, Julie Shepard and Emily Shepard, and five great-grandchildren, Quinn, Henry, Hazel, Cecily and Weston. Poppy waited to enter heaven until he knew Weston was safely delivered to his parents just hours before his passing.

Bob loved and cherished his life with Jean, their family, and many friends.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard D. Tierney and his wife, Nancy.
