Slava Elizabeth Matejka Mowll

1914-2012 Mrs. Slava Elizabeth Matejka Mowll, 97, of Williamstown and formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Friday, October 5, 2012 at Sweet Brook Care Centers.

She was born in Baltimore on October 24, 1914, daughter of Jerry and Elizabeth (Zahradka) Matejka. She attended Baltimore schools and graduated from Goucher College.

Slava was a teacher at Towson High School and later, after earning her pilot's license, worked at Essex Skypark. She was an accomplished gardener (known for her daffodils), golfer, and author of The Matejkas: My Czech Parents Make an American Life in Baltimore. She came to Williamstown in 2005 to be with her family.

Survivors include her daughter- Nancy Mowll Mathews of Williamstown and her son- Kenneth Mowll of Minneapolis, MN. She also leaves two grandchildren- Twyla Mowll and Alas Douglas and one niece, Lynn Matejka Gittings.

Her daughter- Marjorie Mowll and her brother, Jerry Matejka, as well as her former husband, Jack Mowll, are deceased.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial reception for Slava Mowll will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2012 from 2 to 4 at her daughter's home in Williamstown and another at Hope Lutheran Church in Baltimore on Thursday, December 27, at 4 p.m.
