William Tierney

William Edward Tierney, Sr.

1927-2013 PITTSFIELD William Edward Tierney, Sr., 86, of 268 Eleanor Road, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 15, 2013, surrounded by his extended family. Born in Pittsfield on February 8 1927, the son of David J. Tierney, Sr. and Jennie E. Freehoffer Tierney, he was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended St. Michael's College. A World War II veteran, he was inducted into the United States Navy on April 24, 1945 and served as a Seaman First Class until being honorably discharged from the United States Naval Hospital at Bethesda, Maryland, on December 27, 1945. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Tierney was a Master Carpenter and a member of Carpenters Union Local 108. He retired in 1987 with forty years service. He was a communicant of St. Mark Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was also a Boy Scout Troop Leader. He was a published poet, as well, and is remembered as one who leaves this world a better place, and was a hero to many who crossed his path. His family and his grandchildren brought him his greatest joy. He also enjoyed golf, gardening, and bowling. Mr. Tierney leaves his wife, the former Estelle Cross, whom he married December 28, 1978. His first wife, the former Eleanor Burns, died on Easter Sunday 1976. He is also survived by five sons, William E. Tierney, Jr., and his wife Debra of Feeding Hills, Mass., Joseph M. Tierney, and his wife, Michelle, of Grafton, Mass., John P. Tierney and his wife, Michele, of Pittsfield, James F. Tierney and his wife, Mary Beth, of Tewksbury, Mass., and Thomas D. Tierney and his wife, Nancy, of Pittsfield; a brother, David J. Tierney, Jr., of Pittsfield; four sisters, Patricia Campbell of Morrison, Ill., Grace Jones of Stuart, Fla., Rosemary "Ducky" Brennan of Marblehead, Mass., and Constance Coughlin of Hollis, N.H.; his twelve grandchildren, Christopher, Caitlyn, Virginia, Joseph Jr., Melanie, Caroline, Alex, Patrick, Allyson, Sarah, Benjamin, and Ryan, and his great granddaughter, Cristina Vincent; as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends. He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Marian Makes, Margaret Berry, June Gifford, and Eleanor Tierney. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for William Edward Tierney, Sr. will be held Thursday, September 19, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Mark Church concelebrated by Rev. John C. Salatino, Pastor, and Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor of St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care in The Berkshires, the Pediatric Development Center, or to the Berkshire Humane Society, all in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
